What can I expect from my Naturopathic Doctor?
Naturopathic doctors (N.D.) are family practice-oriented primary health care doctors. Naturopathic doctors receive training from a four-year, graduate level, accredited naturopathic medical school and must successfully pass extensive postdoctoral board examination (NPLEX) in order to receive a license. Currently four naturopathic colleges in the United States are accredited by the US Department of Education.

A licensed naturopathic doctor (N.D.) must fulfill state-mandated continuing education requirements annually, and will have a specific scope of practice defined by their state's law. Licensed naturopathic doctors are educated in all of the same basic sciences as an M.D., but also study holistic and nontoxic approaches to therapy, with a strong emphasis on disease prevention and optimizing wellness.
In the state of Washington, naturopathic doctors are board-certified primary care providers trained in conventional medical sciences, diagnosis and treatment, and are experts in natural therapeutics. In addition to a standard medical curriculum, naturopathic doctors are required to complete training in clinical nutrition, homeopathic medicine, botanical medicine, psychology, physical medicine and counseling (to encourage people to make lifestyle changes in support of their personal health).
For information about the Naturopathic Physicians Licensing Examination Board (NPLEX) and the North American Board of Naturopathic Examiners (NABNE), please see the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians' Education page.
